Henry Justice Ford (1860-1940)
H.J. Ford is best know for his illustrations in Andrew Lang's series of twelve "colored" Fairy Books, published between 1889 and 1910.  Born in London, Ford received a degree in Classics from Cambridge.  After graduation he studied at the Slade School of Art.  He was a friend of Edward Burne Jones, one of the pre-eminent Pre-Raphaelites.  The tiles on this page were inspired by Ford's illustrations in a number of the different colored Fairy books.
